47-Years-Family-Owned 1940 Packard One-Twenty 1801 Touring Sedan

This 1940 Packard One-Twenty is a Style 1392 Touring Sedan that was delivered new to the Standard Auto Company of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and was purchased by the seller’s late father in 1978. A refurbishment performed in the early 1980s included a repaint in cream as well as a rebuild of the 282ci L-head straight-eight, while the cabin was retrimmed in tan cloth in 2014. Additional equipment includes a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission with synchromesh as well as independent front suspension, turn signals, a Goddess of Speed radiator mascot, running boards, rear-hinged doors, and painted woodgrain interior trim. This Eighteenth Series Packard is now offered with literature, service records, a Packard-branded blanket, and a Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.
The car was repainted in its current cream using lacquer paint in the 1980s. Equipment includes chrome bumpers, a grille guard, a Goddess of Speed radiator mascot, turn signals, running boards, rear-hinged rear doors, and dual taillights. There is a crack in the driver-side windshield glass and an area of peeling chrome on the left-rear bumperette. Other imperfections in the finish can be seen in the gallery.
The body-color steel wheels wear chrome trim rings and are mounted with Bedford 7.00–16″ bias-ply whitewall tires. A spare wheel is stowed in the trunk. The Safe-T-Flex suspension features front upper A-arms mounted to lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers, lower A-arms formed by control and torque arms, coil springs, and an anti-roll bar, while the solid rear axle is mounted with leaf springs and telescopic shock absorbers. Stopping power is provided by hydraulic drums at each corner.
The cabin was reupholstered during the 1980s refurbishment, and the front and rear bench seating, headliner, sun visors, and door panels were retrimmed in tan cloth in 2014. The painted woodgrain dash and window trim were also refinished in 2014, and additional equipment includes a locking glovebox door, a clock, and a rear robe cord. The AM radio and heater do not work.
The three-spoke steering wheel has a cracked rim, and it frames a 100-mph speedometer, an ammeter, and gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 3,600 miles, and total mileage is unknown.
The 282ci L-head straight-eight features five main bearings and a single downdraft carburetor, and it was factory rated at 120 horsepower at 3,600 rpm. The engine was reportedly rebuilt during the 1980s refurbishment, and the carburetor was overhauled in 2023.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission with synchromesh. The gearbox is said to have been rebuilt in 2014. Areas of corrosion on the underside can be seen in the gallery.
The Packard-branded tag on the included blanket notes that it’s a “Custom Motor Robe tailored for the Packard Motor Company.”
The Pennsylvania title carries Antique Vehicle brand.
