This 1948 Willys-Overland CJ-2A was the subject of a refurbishment in the late 1990s, with work that included rebuilding the 134.2ci inline-four and a repaint in Potomac Gray. The truck was purchased by the seller circa 2019, and additional refurbishment work and modifications were carried out in the ensuing several years. The engine was converted to 12 volts and PerTronix ignition, the three-speed manual transmission was fitted with a Saturn overdrive unit, the exhaust system was replaced, and the wiring was overhauled. Further additions under current ownership have included four-wheel disc brakes, a dual brake master cylinder setup, a padded roll bar, and replacement seat foam, carpeting, and tires. This CJ-2A is now offered in New York with literature, records, a seller-provided narrative, spare parts, and New Hampshire registration.
The CJ-2A, with CJ being short for “Civilian Jeep,” was the first full-production CJ model created for non-military use, and it debuted in June 1945 with production following in July. This example has been repainted in Potomac Gray and features a canvas soft top, dual taillights, a folding windshield, swing-out front glass, twin windshield wipers, and a single side mirror. The soft-top window is cloudy, and imperfections are noted in the paintwork.
The 16″ steel wheels were recently mounted with Firestone tires, per the seller, and a spare is affixed to the passenger side of the body. The truck is equipped with Cutlas manually locking front hubs, and the brake system has been converted to four-wheel discs and a dual master cylinder setup. The wheel bearings and seals were replaced under current ownership along with rebuilding the parking brake. Corrosion is noted on the suspension leaves.
The individual front seats and the rear bench are trimmed in black vinyl, and the front seats have replacement foam. Interior appointments include lap belts, floor mats, a heater, a padded roll bar, and a body-color metal dashboard.
Instrumentation includes a speedometer, a voltmeter, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 77 miles, and total mileage is unknown.
The 134.2ci inline-four is equipped with a single downdraft carburetor and was rebuilt in the late 1990s, per the seller. Work under current ownership has included replacing the fuel tank, starter, alternator, wiring harness, battery, ignition components, engine belts, and hoses as well as a conversion to PerTronix ignition and a 12-volt electrical system.
Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels through a three-speed manual transmission, a Saturn overdrive unit, and a dual-range transfer case. An undercoating has been applied beneath the vehicle, and evidence of a frame weld is noted in the left-front corner.
The Willys-Overland data plate displays the serial number CJ-2A 211281. The New Hampshire registration lists the VIN without the CJ-2A prefix as 211281.
The truck is being offered on its New Hampshire registration, which serves as an ownership document. The registration has expired.
