This 1958 MG MGA 1500 is a US-market roadster that spent time in Texas before it underwent a mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment that totaled over $91k between 2013 and 2015 by British Sports Cars of San Luis Obispo, California. Work during the refurbishment included disassembling the body, a repaint in British Racing Green, powder coating the frame, reupholstering the interior in black vinyl, and overhauling the 1,489cc inline-four, four-speed manual gearbox, suspension, brake, and electrical systems. Over $9k of additional modifications between 2019 and 2020 included the addition of a 3.70:1 ring and pinion, recalibrating the replacement speedometer, and installing 15″ wire-spoke wheels, a brake servo, an alternator conversion, wind wings, fender mirrors, driving lights, interior insulation, and a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel. The car was sold on BaT in March 2020 before it was acquired by the current owner in 2024. This MGA is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the owner with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment records, a tonneau cover, a car cover, spare parts, and a Washington state title that lists the car as a 1959 model.
Delivered new in black, the car was disassembled and stripped to bare metal before it was refinished in the current shade of British Racing Green. Exterior details include driving lights, wind wings, fender-mounted mirrors, a black tonneau cover, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The black vinyl top features a plastic rear window and can be seen in the gallery along with the removed top frame.
Silver-painted 15″x4.5″ 60-spoke wire wheels were fitted in 2019 and wear chrome knock-off center caps and 185/65 Pirelli P4 tires. A spare, jack, and a knock-off mallet are located in the carpeted trunk area. A hydraulic brake booster was added in 2019, and the front wheel cylinders, shoes, and lines are said to have been replaced that year.
The bucket seats were reupholstered in black vinyl with white piping during the refurbishment, and color-matching carpets are protected by MG-branded rubber mats. Replacement trunk carpeting was installed and sound and heat insulation was added to the floors, firewall, and transmission tunnel in 2019. The windshield washer pump is mounted below the right-center portion of the dashboard.
The wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel fronts a steel dashboard painted to match the exterior. Jaeger instrumentation includes a retrofitted 100-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer as well as supplementary gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The speedometer was recalibrated in 2020 following the differential gear ratio change, and the fuel gauge was cleaned and inspected at that time. The five-digit odometer shows 70k miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership.
The 1,489cc inline-four was overbored and rebuilt to run on unleaded fuel during the refurbishment and features .060″ pistons, twin SU carburetors, a 12-volt electrical conversion, a spin-on oil filter, and electronic ignition. Work in 2019 is said to have included replacing the fuel sending unit and radiator fan shroud along with an alternator conversion.
The four-speed manual gearbox was rebuilt during the mechanical refurbishment, the frame and suspension components were stripped and powder coated, and the exhaust system was replaced during the refurbishment. Work between 2019 and 2020 included the installation of a 3.70:1 ring and pinion along with replacing the speedometer pinion seal and inner cable. Additional photos of the underside condition are viewable in the gallery.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists serial numbers, colors, and equipment along with a dispatch date of 16 January 1958.
A set of 15″ steel wheels is included in the sale along with a banjo-style steering wheel, spare parts, refurbishment invoices, and manufacturer’s literature.
The current Washington state title lists an “Antique” brand.
