This 1959 Volkswagen Beetle is said to been acquired by the current owner’s late mother in 2003, who began collecting components for a refurbishment in 2014, with an initial purchase of the 1.6L air-cooled flat-four followed by an overhaul of the four-speed manual transaxle in 2015. The work is noted to have fully started in June 2018 and involved converting the electrical system to 12-volt operation and replacing the speedometer with a later model unit in addition to overhauling the brake and suspension systems, refinishing the brightwork, and painting the body green before the multi-year project was completed in January 2020. Additional details include 15″ steel wheels, BFGoodrich whitewall tires, drum brakes, beige and green upholstery, a retro-style radio, 12-volt charging outlets, and front lap belts. Inherited by the current owner in 2023, this Beetle is now offered in California by the seller on their behalf with refurbishment photos and a clean Colorado title.
The body is finished in green with beige running board mats and fender beading and features dual side-view mirrors, chrome jackhole covers, Hella “snowflake” taillight lenses, dual “pea shooter” exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
The 15″ steel wheels wear chrome VW-stamped hubcaps and are mounted with BFGoodrich thin-whitewall tires. Stopping power is provided by drum brakes at all four corners.
The front bucket seats and rear bench are trimmed in beige and green vinyl upholstery and are joined by color-coordinated door panels. Interior elements include a retro-style radio, 12-volt charging outlets, and front lap belts with Wolfsburg crest logos.
The 90-mph speedometer was sourced from a later model and features an inset fuel-level gauge as well as a five-digit odometer that shows 22k miles. True mileage is unknown.
The dual-port 1.6L air-cooled flat-four was reportedly rebuilt and installed as part of the refurbishment, and it utilizes a 12-volt alternator charging system.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, which is said to have been overhauled circa 2015.
The car is shown above prior to the refurbishment, and photographs taken of the car during the work are provided at the end of the gallery.
