This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220SE is one of 1,112 cabriolets produced for the model year and was previously owned by film director James Bridges and actor Jack Larson. The car’s 2.2-liter inline-six has been converted to use carburetors and the four-speed manual transmission has been converted to a standard clutch. Finished in Light Blue over Cream leather, the car is equipped with a blue convertible top, 13″ steel wheels with full covers, fog lights, a wood veneer dashboard, and a heater. Acquired by the seller in 2015, this Ponton cabriolet is now offered with factory books which are pictured in the gallery, and a clean California title listing it as a 1961 model.
This final-year Ponton was refinished in the factory Light Blue (356) under prior ownership. Exterior features include a replacement blue convertible top, fog lights, fender-mounted turn signals, a driver-side mirror, a fender-mounted antenna, flared quarter panels, a key-locked fuel filler door, and chrome wrap-around bumpers with overriders. The seller notes several small scrapes and other paint blemishes, which are shown up close in the gallery.
Steel 13″ wheels feature slotted chrome covers with body-color centers and were mounted with 185/80 Maxxis MA-1 tires in December 2015. The car was factory equipped with a double-wishbone front and single-joint rear swing axle. Stopping power is provided by hydraulic drums, though the seller notes the brake booster needs to be repaired or rebuilt.
The cabin houses bucket seats reupholstered in Cream leather, accompanied by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Interior appointments include wood trim, an aftermarket CD stereo, an aftermarket tape deck, front vent windows, door map pockets, an electric clock, and a heater. Upholstery flaws can be viewed in the gallery.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a horizontal-sweep 110-mph speedometer, a trip odometer, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 44k miles, about 500 of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.2-liter M127 inline-six was factory equipped with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and has since been converted to dual carburetors.
The car’s four-speed manual transmission was originally equipped with a Hydrak hydraulic automatic clutch. It has since been converted to a standard unit.
The VIN on the California title is 1283011002535B. The chassis number 12803011002535 is pictured on the plate shown above.
