This Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider was manufactured on April 18, 1962, and sold new in May of that year to its first owner in Asti, Italy. The car was fitted with faired-in headlights with plastic covers and brought to the US at some point under prior ownership before being acquired by the seller as a non-running project in 2012. Power is provided by a 1.3L twin-cam inline-four outfitted with a Solex carburetor and mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include 15″ steel wheels, four-wheel drum brakes, black vinyl upholstery, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. This Tipo 101 Spider is now offered at no reserve with a removable hardtop, a previous Italian libretto, 2010 correspondence from Alfa Romeo Automobilismo Storico, and Alabama registration in the seller’s name.
The Giulietta debuted in Sprint coupe form in 1954 and was joined in 1955 by the Berlina sedan, followed in mid-1955 by the Pinin Farina–styled Spider convertible. Production of the Giulietta Spider continued with the longer-wheelbase Tipo 101 from 1959 to 1962, at which point the model was transitioned to the Giulia Spider.
The front fenders of this late Giulietta were modified to accommodate faired-in headlights prior to a repaint in silver under previous ownership. The headlights wear Carello-branded plastic covers secured by tape, while yellow-lens Hella fog lamps have been added below. The right door glass is cracked, and the rear license plate lite housing is missing. Dents around the bodywork along with corrosion and flaws in the finish are shown up close in the gallery below.
A removable hardtop will accompany the car, though its rear window is missing. Rust and damage are also present.
The 15″ steel wheels are wrapped in 165/80 Federal Super Steel 657 tires, and a spare is stored behind the seats. The braking system utilizes four-wheel drums with finned front units, while the suspension incorporates an independent front setup and a solid rear axle with coilover shock absorbers all around.
The cabin houses bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl upholstery, and black carpets line the floors. A rearview mirror sits atop the dash, which wears a partially separating black vinyl cover. The right window crank has been removed and will accompany the car.
A wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia instrumentation including a central 7k-rpm tachometer with an inset oil-pressure readout flanked by a 180-km/h speedometer and a combination gauge monitoring oil temperature, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 57k kilometers (~35k miles), and total mileage is unknown.
The 1.3L twin-cam inline-four is equipped with a single Solex carburetor and mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. The engine has not been started or turned over under current ownership.
The exhaust system is rusted, and photos displaying the condition of the underside are presented in the gallery below.
Correspondence from Alfa Romeo Automobilismo Storico provides production details.
The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for vehicles of its age. It is being sold on its Alabama registration.
