Single-Family-Owned 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220b 4-Speed

This 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220b was purchased new by the current owner’s husband in 1964 and collected via European Delivery in Stuttgart, Germany. The car was later registered in Illinois before being relocated to Italy, where it is said to have spent time touring Europe prior to being stored and later returned to the US. It is finished in Light Gray over red upholstery and powered by a 2.2-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission. Features include 13″ steel wheels, a fender-mounted antenna, chrome bumpers, a Becker Europe stereo, and front bucket seats. This Fintail is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the current owner with a data card, an owner’s manual, sales documents, and a clean Illinois title in the owner’s name.
Heckflosse, or Fintail, versions of the W111 chassis were built between 1959 and 1968. This example left the factory finished in Light Gray (140) and features a fender-mounted antenna, chrome bumpers, chrome trim, vent windows, and a driver-side mirror. The seller believes that some of the chrome trim pieces may have been replaced. Some of the weatherstripping is cracked and can be seen in the gallery below.
The 13″ steel wheels wear covers with body-color accents and are mounted with 7.25-13 BFGoodrich Silvertown tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes.
The front bucket seats and rear bench are trimmed in red upholstery, and interior appointments include a padded upper dashboard, a Becker Europe stereo, and a VDO clock. An aftermarket air conditioning system has been installed but is inoperative and missing components. There are stains in the headliner.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames vertically oriented instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 53k miles. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.2-liter M180 V inline-six features dual carburetors and was factory rated at 110 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The car was in non-running form when it was recently returned to the US, and the seller states that the carburetors and spark plugs were cleaned to bring it back to running condition in preparation for the sale, though further service is required.
