This 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Sunroof Deluxe Microbus underwent a multi-year restoration performed by Silver Lining Auto Restorations in Silverton, Oregon that was completed in 2017. Finished in Cumulus White and Bahama Blue over Como Green vinyl, the bus is powered by a replacement dual-port 1.6-liter flat-four mated to a four-speed “freeway flyer” manual transaxle. Equipment includes drum brakes, 14″ steel wheels, white-finished bumpers, auxiliary lights, a safari-style windshield, a retractable canvas sunroof, a cabin heater, three-row seating, and jail bars in the cargo area. Acquired by the seller in 2020, this Type 2 is now offered with the Volkswagen AutoMuseum Vehicle Identity Certificate, build photos, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.
The bus left the factory finished in Cumulus White and Sea Blue and was refinished during the restoration in Cumulus White (L680) and Bahama Blue (L519). Exterior details include white-finished bumpers, auxiliary lights, a safari-style windshield, dual side mirrors, and a retractable cloth sunroof.
White-finished 14″ steel wheels with chrome VW-stamped hubcaps are wrapped in Kelly Celebrity whitewall tires. Stopping power is provided by drum brakes at all four corners. The braking system was overhauled in 2024 with the replacement of the master cylinder, fluid reservoir, brake switch, wheel cylinders, and shoes.
The forward cabin features individual seats trimmed in Como Green (K377B) with turquoise piping. A black rubber mat lines the floors, and additional appointments include a cabin heater, overhead ventilation, sliding side windows, and lap belts. Fresh-air hoses were replaced in preparation for the sale.
The right-side barn doors open to reveal two rows of bench seating trimmed in matching upholstery, a black rubber floor liner, and pop-out windows. Jail bars are fitted in the cargo area.
The steering wheel wears a Wolfsburg crest and fronts a refurbished 80-mph speedometer and a fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 24k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The replacement dual-port 1.6-liter flat-four was installed under previous ownership. Work in preparation for the sale consisted of changing the oil and replacing the fuel filter and fuel lines.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt four-speed “freeway flyer” manual transaxle and reduction boxes. A rust inhibitor coating was applied under previous ownership to the underside, and the transaxle fluid was changed in preparation for the sale.
In-process photos of the restoration can be viewed in the gallery.
The Volkswagen Zertifikat lists factory colors and options, a build date of November 1, 1965, and New Orleans, Louisiana as the initial delivery destination.
