This 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia is an SO-42 camper that was first delivered through the U.S. Tourist delivery program in Europe before being shipped stateside, where it was acquired by the seller in 1989. The bus has been fitted with a replacement drivetrain consisting of a single-port 1.6L air-cooled flat-four and a four-speed manual transaxle that has been modified with a “Freeway Flyer” gearset. Finished in Birch Green and Pastel White over beige vinyl, the bus features jalousie windows, a roof rack, a flat-folding rear bench seat, storage cabinets, fold-out tables, and privacy curtains. This Type 2 camper is now offered with service records, spare parts, and a California title in the seller’s name.
The 11-window body left the factory finished in Pearl White (L87) and was repainted Birch Green (L511) and Lotus White (L282) in the 1990s. Shortly after, the bus suffered an engine bay fire, causing damage to the paint. Exterior details include five jalousie windows, “fried egg” front turn indicators, overrider bumpers, dual side-view mirrors, and a roof rack. An uninstalled shore power connection is included in the sale.
The 15″ steel wheels are mounted with 205/65 Vredestein Comtrac tires. Stopping power is provided by drum brakes at all four corners. A set of VW-stamped hubcaps are included in the sale.
The split bench seat is trimmed in perforated beige leather with gray piping and is joined by gray door and kick panels. Interior elements include a parcel shelf, sliding side windows, lap belts, and a passenger grab handle.
The two-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of an 80-mph VDO speedometer and a fuel level gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer currently shows 22k miles, though the seller notes they have added approximately 70k miles during their ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
Dual swing-out side doors on the right provide access to a rear cabin that is equipped with a flat-folding rear bench as well as a rear-facing seat. Additional details include wood paneling, a faucet, storage cabinets, fold-out tables, and privacy curtains.
The replacement single-port 1.6L air-cooled flat-four was sourced from GEX International of Baldwin Park, California, and installed in 1998.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement four-speed manual transaxle that has been modified with a “Freeway Flyer” gearset.
