L28-Powered, 24-Years-Owned 1970 Datsun 240Z Series I 5-Speed

This 1970 Datsun 240Z Series I is said to have been acquired by the seller from the initial owner in California in 2001, and it was modified in the 2000s with the installation of a 2.8-liter L28 inline-six, a five-speed manual transmission, and an R200 differential. The body was refinished in yellow under previous ownership, and the black vinyl-trimmed bucket seats were re-upholstered in 2021. Equipment includes 15″ Enkei wheels, a front spoiler, front disc brakes, a woodgrain steering wheel and shift knob, and a heater. This 240Z is now offered with the removed engine, service records, and a clean California title that lists the car as a 1971 model.
The car left the factory finished in Sunshine Yellow (919) and is said to have been repainted after a tree fell on the car in the 1970s, at which time the badges were removed. It features a front spoiler, a driver-side mirror, and bright window trim. The seller reports the bumpers should be re-chromed and the windshield washer sprayers are nonfunctional. Rust is noted on the right rocker panel and dog leg along with paint chips and areas of faded paint along the body. Close-up photos of the paintwork and trim are presented in the gallery.
The 15″ Enkei Compe wheels were mounted under current ownership and wear Yokohama AVID Ascend GT tires. The car was factory equipped with an independent suspension, a front stabilizer bar, and rack-and-pinion steering, and front and rear strut tower bars have been added. Stopping is provided by power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes.
The bucket seats are upholstered in black vinyl and were fitted with replacement foam in 2021. Equipment includes a wooden shift knob, a center console, a lockable glovebox, an electric rear window defogger, and a heater. The radio and antenna are inoperative.
The woodgrain steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline. An analog clock and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, amperage, and fuel level are housed over the center stack. The five-digit odometer is said to have rolled over and shows 24k miles, approximately 7k of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.8-liter L28 inline-six was installed circa 2007, and it has dual SU carburetors. The cylinder head was resurfaced and ARP head studs and replacement valve guides were fitted in 2009. The fuel tank filler and vent hoses were replaced in 2021.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission that was fitted under current ownership along with an R200 differential with 3.90:1 gears according to the seller. Rust is noted on the floorboard, and additional underside photos are provided in the gallery.
The removed engine will accompany the car along with other spare parts, service records, and manufacturer’s literature.
