104-Mile 1972 Volkswagen Beetle Baja Champion Special Edition

This 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle is one of 1,000 Baja Champion Special Editions produced for the model year, and it was delivered new to Chick Iverson, Inc. of Newport Beach, California. The car remained with the dealership until 1996, when it was acquired by the late owner of West Coast Metric, Lorenzo Pearson, and subsequently placed in his museum. Power comes from a 1,584cc air-cooled flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle, and the body is finished in Marathon Blue Metallic over black leatherette upholstery. Additional details include 15″ Lemmerz steel wheels, white “Baja” side stripes, driving lights, chrome tapered exhaust tips, salt-and-pepper carpeting, a lockable glove compartment, a two-speed fresh air blower fan, and front shoulder belts. This 1302 Super Beetle shows 104 miles and is now offered on behalf of the late owner’s estate with the window sticker, owner’s manual, sales literature, a tool roll, a jack, and a clean California title.
All 1972 Baja Champion Special Editions were finished in Marathon Blue Metallic (L96M), and they were produced to celebrate Volkswagen’s off-road racing success between 1967 and 1971. Exterior details include white “Baja” side stripes, driving lights, and chrome tapered exhaust tips.
The 15″ Lemmerz “Weltmeister” steel wheels feature VW-stamped hexagonal aluminum center caps, and they are mounted with 6.00-15 Pirelli bias ply tires. Super Beetles were factory equipped with a MacPherson strut and coil spring front suspension in place of the standard Beetle’s torsion bar setup. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drum brakes.
The front bucket seats and rear bench are trimmed in black basketweave-pattern leatherette, and additional interior elements include salt-and-pepper carpeting, a lockable glove compartment, a two-speed fresh air blower fan, hand-crank windows, and front shoulder belts.
A Baja Champion commemorative plaque is affixed to the glove compartment door.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 100-mph VDO speedometer with an inset fuel-level gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 104 miles.
The 1,584cc air-cooled flat-four features a Solex downdraft carburetor.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
The owner’s manual, sales literature, a tool roll, and a jack are included in the sale.
The window sticker shows initial delivery to Chick Iverson, Inc. of Newport Beach, California, along with colors, options, and an importer’s suggested retail price of $2,261.
