This 1972 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback was refinished in matte silver and black prior to the seller’s 2013 purchase, and the black interior was also refurbished. In 2016, the air-cooled flat-four was rebuilt with 1,641cc displacement and it is paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes front disc brakes, 15″ alloy wheels, a roof rack, and painted earlier-year bumpers in addition to front bucket seats, front and rear seat belts, an AM/FM stereo, and a heater. This Squareback has received several car-show awards and is now offered with owner’s and service manuals, spare parts, and a Kansas title in the seller’s name.
Previously finished in yellow, the car underwent a color change to matte silver with a black roof. Exterior details include hooded headlights, a roof rack, dual side mirrors, earlier-year bumpers, and quad exhaust outlets.
Aftermarket 15″ alloy wheels with black-finished recesses are mounted with 145-section Nankang tires up front and 165-section Widetrack tires out back. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums, and the seller states the front lines and pads have been replaced.
The interior is said to have been refreshed, and the front bucket seats and the rear bench are upholstered in black vinyl. Additional appointments include front and rear seat belts, a cabin heater, a fire extinguisher, an AM/FM stereo, and Blaupunkt speakers.
The aftermarket four-spoke steering wheel frames a VDO 110-mph speedometer along with a clock and an inoperative fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 148 miles, and the seller approximates 1k miles driven under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The air-cooled flat-four was rebuilt in 2016 to displace 1,641cc and is equipped with dual carburetors.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, and the clutch was replaced at the time of the engine rebuild. Rust on some underside surfaces is further depicted in the gallery.
A spare hatch door is included in the sale, as are other spares shown in the gallery.
The vehicle’s Kansas title carries an “antique” brand as well as an “exceeds mechanical limits” mileage-status note.
