This Maserati Bora got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1973 Maserati Bora is one of 564 examples manufactured during a seven-year production run and one of approximately 250 delivered from the factory with a 4.9-liter DOHC V8 paired with a ZF five-speed manual gearbox. Chassis 686 is a US-market car that was completed on March 10, 1973, and delivered new in Los Angeles, California. It was moved to Texas in 2006 and underwent a refurbishment that was performed by Santiago Sports & Classics of Oklahoma City in 2013 before it was purchased by the selling dealer in March 2023. The car is finished in yellow, and equipment includes quadruple Weber carburetors, a PerTronix electronic ignition, European-market exhaust headers, a Citroën hydraulic system, four-wheel independent suspension, and 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels. Inside, fixed-back bucket seats are trimmed in black leather upholstery and are accompanied by air conditioning and power windows. Service performed by the selling dealer included the installation of replacement clutch cylinders, a power brake pump and accumulators, an oil accumulator, valve cover gaskets, and a battery as well as a timing chain adjustment and a fluid service. This Bora is now offered with factory literature, tools, refurbishment records, and a clean Michigan title listing the car as a 1974 model.

The Bora debuted in March 1971, featuring a wedge-shaped profile styled by Italdesign’s Giorgetto Giugiaro. Additional design elements include a brushed stainless-steel roof and A-pillars as well as hydraulically deployed pop-up headlights. Later Boras, such as this car, featured a rectangular vent panel on the front hood, a vented lower front valance, and rounded headlight bucket corners.

This example was delivered from the factory in yellow, and the selling dealer notes that the rocker panels were repainted under previous ownership. The front clip was repainted under current ownership, and close-ups of the finish, trim, and lenses can be viewed in the photo gallery below. The car retains US-market bumpers, side markers, and taillights. Areas of paint checking on the roof and deck lid can be seen in the gallery.

Campagnolo cast-alloy wheels wear chrome covers and are wrapped in 215/70R15 Pirelli P4000 tires, while a spare housed overtop the transaxle wears a black cover. The braking system is based on a high-pressure LHM hydraulic system from then-parent company Citröen and utilizes vented discs at all four corners. Two brake pressure accumulators were installed by the selling dealer along with a replacement power brake pump and hoses.

The cabin houses a pair of fixed-back bucket seats that were retrimmed in black pleated leather during the refurbishment. Color-coordinated upholstery extends to the door panels, dashboard, and center console, while salt-and-pepper carpets line the floors. Adjustment of the seat height, steering column, and pedal box is handled via the hydraulic system, and additional amenities include power windows and air conditioning. The selling dealer notes that the radio works intermittently.

A quintet of instruments to the driver’s right includes an electric clock as well as gauges monitoring coolant temperature, fuel level, oil temperature, and voltage. The five-digit odometer shows 22k miles, approximately 300 of which were added by the selling dealer.

The mid-mounted 4.9-liter V8 utilizes an aluminum block, aluminum cylinder heads with hemispherical combustion chambers, dual overhead camshafts on each bank, and quadruple Weber carburetors. Output was factory rated at 330 horsepower. PerTronix electronic ignition has been added, and maintenance performed under the selling dealer’s ownership includes the installation of a replacement oil cooler hose, oil pressure sending unit, belts, valve cover gaskets, and an Optima Red Top battery as well as a timing chain adjustment and a fluid service. The selling dealer notes areas of paint loss on the engine, and engine stamping AM107/11/49/*686* can be seen in the gallery.
