This 1974 Norton Commando 850 Roadster was purchased by the seller in October 2021 from the long-term owner of approximately three decades, and subsequent work included installing a Colorado Norton Works brake master cylinder and hydraulic clutch kit, Biltwell handlebars and grips, and Brembo levers. Additional service consisted of rebuilding the front brake caliper and Amal carburetors as well as reupholstering the seat and replacing the fuel petcocks, battery, fuel lines, seat foam, and wiring harness. Powered by an 828cc air-cooled parallel twin paired with a four-speed transmission, the bike is finished in black and features Boyer Bransden electronic ignition, 19″ wire-spoke wheels, folding passenger foot pegs, a dual exhaust system, and both center and side stands. This Commando is now offered with a service manual, parts invoices, spare parts, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.
The bodywork is said to have been refinished in black with gold accents, and the two-up seat was reupholstered and received replacement foam under current ownership. Additional details include a chrome-plated headlight shell, a combined stoplight and taillight, folding passenger foot pegs, and both center and side stands. The seller states the fuel tank has been cleaned and resealed.
The 19″ wire-spoke wheels are mounted with older Dunlop tires that require replacement. Suspension consists of a Roadholder telescopic fork as well as dual shocks mounted to the swingarm. Braking is handled by a front disc and rear drum, the former of which is fed by a Colorado Norton Works master cylinder. A Colorado Norton Works hydraulic clutch kit with steel-braided lines has been fitted. The front brake caliper was rebuilt and the brake pads were replaced under current ownership.
The Biltwell handlebars feature gold grips along with Brembo levers, while instrumentation includes a 150-mph Smiths speedometer and a 9k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 16k miles, approximately 150 of which have been ridden by the current owner. The tachometer is nonfunctional.
The Isolastic rubber-mounted 828cc air-cooled parallel twin is equipped with Boyer Bransden electronic ignition, dual Amal carburetors, a kick starter, and a dual exhaust system. Output was rated at 60 horsepower when new. Work under current ownership is said to have included changing the oil, rebuilding the carburetors, installing a replacement wiring harness, and replacing the battery, fuel lines, and fuel petcocks.
Power is transferred to the rear wheel through a four-speed transmission with a right-side shifter.
The number 308637 stamped on the engine case matches the number stamped on the headstock plate, a photo of which is provided in the gallery.
A service manual and spare parts are included in the sale along with parts invoices shown in the gallery below.
