This 1985 Volvo 740 Turbo was built into a race car and campaigned in SCCA ITE and SPM classes as well as vintage racing events before the current owner’s acquisition in 2022. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four that has produced as much as 591 horsepower on race fuel, and it is mated to a four-speed Rankin dog box. Chassis modifications include a Kaplhenke Racing rear subframe and tubular front control arms, Öhlins and Bilstein adjustable coilovers, Ground Control front camber plates, and Wilwood brake calipers, while lightweight bodywork features box flares, a front air dam, a rear diffuser, hood vents, and a carbon-fiber rear wing. The race-prepped cabin has a full roll cage, Cobra racing seats, an AiM MXL digital dash, and a fire-suppression system, and additional equipment includes a Peterson dry-sump lubrication system, AEM engine management, an ATL fuel cell, and three-piece 17” wheels. This Volvo race car is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the owner with an ICSCC logbook, service records, spare parts, a Carfax report, and a clean Oregon title.
The bodywork has been modified with lightweight panels and steel box flares, and the sunroof was replaced with a filler panel. The car is finished in silver with blue stripes, and graphics on the nose panel mimic the appearance of headlights and turn signals. A front air dam incorporates inlets for brake cooling ducts, and other details include a rear diffuser, mesh grille inserts, louvered hood vents, flush-mounted hood and trunk latches, side exhaust outlets, and an adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing with aluminum stands.
The front suspension has been modified with Bilstein adjustable coilovers, Ground Control front camber plates, and Kaplhenke Racing tubular front control arms, while the rear suspension features a Kaplhenke Racing rear subframe and Öhlins coilovers. Braking is handled by Wilwood six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.
Three-piece 17” wheels with black centers and polished lips are secured on extended studs, and they are wrapped in 315/35 Hoosier R7 competition tires.
The cabin is protected by a roll cage with door bars, and both Cobra Evolution Pro-Fit racing seats have Schroth harnesses. The dashboard and door panels are formed from bead-rolled aluminum sheet, and a FireCharger fire-suppression system has been installed along with a Jamex aluminum accelerator pad, a perforated dead pedal, and a black rubber floor mat.
The steering wheel is mounted to a quick-release hub and features dials for adjusting boost and traction control, the latter of which is inoperative. Factory gauges have been replaced with an AiM MXL digital dash. The car does not have an odometer.
An ATL fuel cell is mounted in the trunk.
Prior to installation in 2022, the B230FT inline-four was bored and stroked to a calculated displacement of 2.5 liters. It is equipped with a Precision 5858 turbocharger, a Peterson dry-sump lubrication system, and AEM engine management.
Dynamometer test results in the car’s current configuration show peak output measurements of 393 horsepower and 357 lb-ft of torque, which the seller states was achieved on ethanol-free 92-octane fuel. Previous results measuring output on 118-octane race fuel are provided in the gallery.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed Rankin CR dog box and a rear end with 3.54:1 gearing.
Extra body panels, wheels, engine components, and other spare parts are included in the sale.
Photos taken during track use are presented in the gallery.
The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists at least one open recall. The title lists the car as a Volvo 740.
