This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL was registered in Maryland before it was acquired by the current owner in 2023. Over $10k of subsequent work in 2024 included refurbishing the 15″ Gullideckel wheels, reupholstering the B-pillars and driver’s seat back cushion, resealing the four-speed automatic transmission, and replacing the cylinder head gaskets for the 4.2-liter M116 V8 along with the water pump, rear muffler, drive belts, driveline mounts, timing and fuel delivery components, and several seals. The car is finished in Arctic White over blue leather upholstery and is equipped with a sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, and a Becker cassette stereo. This W126 420SEL shows 176k miles and is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the owner, a licensed retail dealer, with service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Maryland title.
The car is finished in Arctic White and features a power-operated sunroof, a power antenna, dual exhaust outlets, and bright window and bumper trim. The seller states that a paint correction was performed and a ceramic coating was applied in 2024. The photos used in the listing were taken in October and November 2024.
This is a relist after the car sold on BaT in December 2024 and the winning bidder was unable to take delivery due to circumstances outside their control. This was due to no fault of the car.
The 15″ Gullideckel alloy wheels are mounted with 205/65 Goodyear and Eldorado tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted four-wheel discs with ABS. The wheels were refurbished and the front caster link, brake pads, rotors, shock absorbers, and front ball joints were replaced in October 2024.
The power-adjustable front seats and the rear bench are upholstered in blue leather and are complemented by a color-coordinated center console, door panels, and carpets. Appointments include automatic climate control, cruise control, and a Becker Grand Prix cassette stereo. The driver’s seat back cushion and the B-pillars were reupholstered under current ownership. There are dead pixels on the stereo screen and a stain is shown on the right side of the rear seat.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline as well as an analog clock and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and instant fuel economy. The six-digit odometer shows 176k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The 4.2-liter M116 V8 was factory rated at 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. Mechanical work under current ownership included replacing the timing chain, chain guides, valve guides, cylinder head gaskets, water pump, coolant temperature sensor, fuel distributor and pressure regulator, fuel injectors, breather hoses, drive belts, vacuum system components, engine mounts, and assorted engine seals and gaskets.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The transmission was resealed and the transmission mount and rear muffler assembly were replaced at the time of the engine work.
The Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage. There is a gap in entries between 1994 and 2012.
