This Mercedes-Benz R129 SL got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500 has 69k miles following history in multiple states, and the seller purchased it on BaT in January 2023. Subsequent work has included repainting the front bumper cover, rebuilding the Becker stereo, and replacing the driveshaft rear flex disc, driver’s seat cushion, steering angle sensor, lower oil pan gasket, camshaft magnets, and spark plugs. The convertible is finished in Black Opal Metallic over two-tone gray Exclusive leather and is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Features include a removable hardtop, a replacement black soft top, 18″ AMG Monoblock wheels, xenon headlights, and heated power-adjustable seats. This R129 is now offered with the owner’s manual, service records, a hardtop stand and cover, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Wisconsin title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in Black Opal Metallic (189) and features a matching removable hardtop as well as a black soft top that a previous owner stated had been replaced. Further exterior details comprise xenon headlights, fog lights, and fender air vents. The soft-top hydraulic cylinders were replaced with rebuilt units in September 2017, a previous owner reported that the hood and left-front fender were previously refinished, and the front bumper cover was repainted in May 2025. The seller notes a ding on the left side of the hardtop.

The 18″ AMG Monoblock wheels are mounted with 245/40 front and 275/35 rear Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires that have date codes from 2019. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Work in 2019 included installing Bilstein dampers and replacing the front lower control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, and brake pads and rotors. The steering angle sensor was replaced in June 2024.

The heated power-adjustable seats are upholstered in two-tone gray Exclusive leather that extends to the dashboard, center console, and door panels. Burl wood accents the doors and center stack, and amenities include a deployable roll bar, seat position memory, a Bose sound system, a heated rear hardtop window, cruise control, and automatic climate control. The hardtop headliner was replaced in September 2022, the driver’s seat foam padding was replaced in May 2024, and the Becker stereo was rebuilt to include Bluetooth connectivity in March 2025. The seller notes missing pixels in the stereo display, that the vanity mirror lights do not work, and that one key does not always work starting the car. Scratches are visible near the memory seat controls and the driver’s seat outer bolster has frayed stitching.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and auxiliary gauges. The digital odometer indicates 69k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership.

The 5.0-liter M119 V8 was factory rated at 315 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. Work in 2022 included replacing the radiator, thermostat, coolant hoses, and coolant temperature sensor, and work since May 2024 has consisted of replacing the camshaft magnets, spark plugs, and lower oil pan gasket. The oil was also changed in preparation for the sale.
